Eye-patch came off. Scarcely ever did, yet each time Fyodor found himself oddly charmed by Nikolai’s mismatched eyes. Whether one, or perhaps even both, were contact lenses or heterochromia was natural, that he couldn't know – seldom could line separating Nikolai’s staginess and genuineness be discerned. Fyodor couldn't tell if that’s due to his lack of insight or line never being fixed in the first place; just like one separating sanity from utter madness wasn’t.
Nikolai rested chin on palm and leaned forwards. “Tell me Dos-kun, what do you think is the worse”, he murmured in equally sentimental and derisive tone, as if vacillating between scorn and affections. Despite sorrowful smile there was something in Nikolai’s expression that brought warranted alarm.
“To clip bird’s wings or to take its voice away?”
In which Nikolai is driven to brink of madness by love, as result saves Fyodor from guaranteed death, brings him to safety and helps him recover. Except now that he has Fyodor within arm’s reach he won’t be so willing to let go – or at all.
