Garp takes Ace from Dawn Island when he is 14 to train him in one of the Marine bases so he can become a Marine. However, those with the will of D would never just do as they are told. So, Ace escapes from Garp's ship when they dock on an island. Ace finds himself in the New World waters with no way back because if he goes back home, Garp would just take him again. Thus, he decides to get stronger and do what the brothers used to do best: beating people and stealing.
