Chapter Text

It was unusual for Sydney to feel ill at ease in her own home, her home was often her only safe space from her job and life of espionage.

Now, her secret life had come to her house. Anna Espinosa sat next to her at the counter, legs crossed, holding one of Sydney’s wine glasses in her long-fingered hand.

If anyone at SD-6 knew about this, Sydney would be fired right away, but if anything, that made it better. Her whole adult life had been consumed by what SD-6 required of her, and now, at the worst time possible, she’d made the decision to break the rules.

Anna hadn’t said much, she’d mostly sipped her drink and watched Sydney with her dark, cat-like eyes.

“You don’t look like a killer,” Anna finally said, setting her half-full glass down.

“I’m not a killer,” Sydney said quickly, well aware of the fact that anything she said could be used against her someday.

“So, you would kill me, given the chance?”

Sydney paused, the atmosphere of the room getting tenser by the second. She knew she couldn’t, she wasn’t the kind of woman who killed without a second thought, even when it came to someone like Anna, she was sure that when it came down to it, she wouldn’t be able to pull the trigger.

“Would you kill me?” Sydney asked, setting her own glass down.

“Oh, Syd. Of course, I would.” Anna placed her hand on Sydney’s face, tracing her cheekbone with her thumb. “Doesn’t mean I’d enjoy it, though.”

“I-”

The front door opened and Anna quickly leaned back. Francie entered, dropping her coat on Sydney’s sofa. “Hey, Syd, sorry I didn’t call. Who’s this?”

“I was just leaving.” Anna stood up, before turning to look at Sydney. “See you at work.”

Then she left, leaving Francie looking slightly confused. “Who was that?”

“Uh, a friend from work.” Sydney stood up, feeling slightly flushed. “How was your day?”

“I am so done with my stupid job!” Francie took Anna’s empty seat and poured herself a glass of wine.

“Yeah,” Sydney looked back at her friend. “So am I. You meet the weirdest people at the bank.”

Francie smiled, “It’s funny, I assumed that most people you’d meet in your line of work would be relatively normal.”

Sydney almost laughed out loud, then felt bad about the weight of the secret she was hiding from her best friend. “You’d be surprised.”

“I guess I would be.” Francie took a sip of wine, “Well, invite her to stay for dinner next time.”

The streetlights had been on for over an hour, but the one right outside the window was flicking slightly, making the shadows in the house look like people.

“I will,” Sydney smiled. “If she ever comes back.”
