Brendan’s perched on concrete, his hands folded in front of his face, staring down at the trickle of water that almost shimmers under the fading light of the moon. Below him lies a body, cold by now, but still beautiful. Her long, blonde hair obscures her face, and her hand’s outstretched, turning the water red as it flows through her thin fingers.
It’s Emily Kostich, of course. He’d recognize her anywhere, no matter what state she was in—dead being one of them, he supposes, though he’d never imagined a world in which he outlived her. The two faint pinpricks still visible on the side of her neck had made that world even more inconceivable for him, and yet here they are.
Brendan, human, alive, somehow. Em, undead and dead again, a stake driven so far through her heart he could swear it’s coming out the other side.
He needs to get her out of here.

Then it hit him — some dam in his guts gave way, and just like that, Sebastian's quill couldn't move fast enough:
"MC… are you doing okay?" Ink smeared as he wrote. The paper crumpled like his resolve, chucked into the bin. Too transparent. "How have you been?" Too loaded, too intimate; another reject shot to the floor. "Thanks for the heads up about the quiz." Rung hollow and yet also reeked of trying too hard.
Thinking about any other girl like this, writing her, would have made him feel dirty, especially with Violet's taste still lingering — but this was her. She was the loophole in his moral code, a habit he couldn't kick. If Violet found out somehow, she could choke.
No, that wasn't true. He would need to quit catastrophizing.
Rationalization slithered in, thin and insidious. No need for sentiment, just a smoke screen.
At last: "I've seen some strange things in the Undercroft lately. I feel like asking Ominis would get me a lecture. Want to investigate if you've got time?" Nothing spilled but words, no heart on sleeve — yet the sting of foolishness lingered.
Fuck it. Time to kill off this curiosity, crush it underfoot before it grew legs.
