That he had at once taken and thrown the stake towards the wall where the old lamp shone still its gastly blueish flame. And as he stood protectively at the front of the one open coffin everything within the crypt abruptly seemed to freeze.
He shouldn't be standing here, he realized, staring forward as if struck at both his friends and mentor. It should be Arthur, the wonderful man who she saw fit to marry. It should be Quincey, whose clever cunning and heftier temperament they'd grown to admire. Or perhaps even his old Professor, in another life, defending the fact that every existent illness must somewhere hide its cure.
Truthfully, if someone was going to stand here today and say ‘no’ to Abraham van Helsing, nobody present would've guessed it might be Jack.
