By the time the noise died down, she was sure she could feel the nerves in her teeth writhing against the enamel. Propping herself up on one arm, Lara scanned the room once, taking note of every broken column, every shattered piece of debris. Karel was nowhere to be seen. Good — if not a genuine relief. Gone rarely meant dead in her line of work, but truth be told, she could settle for almost anything that might give her some reprieve.
Lara sat up, wincing at the instant scream of a thousand angry muscles. The blast had knocked her into a sort of control unit at the southern wall, tearing open some old wounds in the process, but it hadn’t killed her. She was alive. -
