Summary
“Are you that guy?” She says, her voice hushed and laden with syrupy sympathy that makes him feel slightly nauseated. “The one who escaped Jigsaw?”
“Uh,” he says. “Yeah.”
“I am so sorry that happened to you,” she says. Her eyes well up with sympathetic tears. “You are so brave.”
“Thanks,” he says, because he doesn’t know what else he could say. He doesn’t feel brave. He feels like a coward actually, a sobbing little baby who can’t stop snivelling in the dark. Lawrence was really the brave one, who went the furthest, who did it all, and he seemingly cast off the long cloak of fear and returned to his family with ease.
Adam knew Lawrence for a day. Not even a full day. One day. He should not have any particular attachment to him. It should be easy to let him go.
Somehow it’s not.----
The world Adam left is not the same as the one he re-enters. He doesn't fit. There's only one person who understands what he's going through, and he hasn't seen him in months. On his own, he can't find a path to a new normal.
You can't rebuild society alone.
Lawrence has found a path to follow.

Lawrence’s breath hitches, with the lull of his name shaped by Adam’s mouth and tongue; with Adam inching toward him, so close, almost pressed together, arm to arm and shoulder to shoulder; but they do not touch, not again—not yet, and Lawrence has learned of grief and of mourning, yes, but never before had he felt the two so strongly together, coiled like red strings of fate.
“Father,” Adam hedges—almost as if he were somewhat afraid of what Lawrence’s answer could be. “Can I?”
“…Yes,” Lawrence murmurs, his lungs granted capacity again, despite the itch in his palms and the slip of his eyes, to the shape of Adam’s mouth.
