It was May of 2024. In hindsight, life wasn’t bad. It was messed up at times, but it definitely wasn’t bad. Until Rosalie Davis was murdered. Normally, when you died, it was end of story, final, but not this time. No, instead, when Rosalie was murdered, she was born in a different universe, one that was only seen on a screen in her world that she didn’t even watch. Rosalie had things fairly good throughout her life, and she had protective parents. Within that protection allowed for her to become a bit too naive and too innocent for her own good. When she was reborn, those things came along with her. She was born a smaller-than-average baby to a loving John and Mary Winchester for parents, a five year old Sam Winchester for a brother, and a nine year old Dean Winchester for an eldest brother. After Mary died, John wanted to keep Rosalie safe, and he did that by not telling her anything about hunting or monsters, which resulted in her never learning about it because it was always put off and John told Sam and Dean not to tell her under any circumstances.

Summary
The men and monsters he was around were the types that had stalked him and his mother and had her killed. Alistar was the one that had hurt Dean in such a way that he refused to speak about it to anyone, including Sam. They found joy in hurting the other prisoners when they had done nothing wrong.
He may not have his powers, but that wouldn’t last as long as they hoped. He would keep his mouth closed and his head down, but he would not forget anything that they had done. Dean Winchester has spent his whole life cleaning up his father's messes. Now that his little brother, Sam, is settled in California and Bobby's got a handle on the garage, they convinced Dean to finally do something for himself. After a chance encounter at the Air Force recruitment fair Sam dragged him to, Dean got hooked on air traffic control, and he gets stationed at Kansas City Tower for his final leg of training. There, he has to impress his on-job instructor Castiel Novak, the ex-Air Force captain who piqued his interest in ATC in the first place. (And only in ATC. He swears. Those blue eyes and dark hair and stupid hat have nothing to do with it.) If all that wasn't hard enough, just one week into his OJT, Dean gets a call telling him his father is dying and has to move back home to live out his final days-which could be more like years.
Dean has to decide whether to continue to let his life be defined by his father's mistakes and his misguided obligation to everyone else, or if he's brave enough-and strong enough-to find a life in his own shape.

The world has been saved, yet again, but this time, Dean is forced to carry on without his best friend. His best friend, who loved him. In true Winchester fashion, Dean decides to shove down and bury his feelings about the last words that Cas said to him and the implications thereof. Instead he buries himself in alcohol, hunting, and stupid ass decisions. After a failed rescue attempt in the Empty, he’s forced to reassess what his life looks like without the angel. Until, one day, a run of the mill hunt goes wrong because of a small bit of rebar.
Castiel somehow awakens in the Empty, much to the Shadow’s ever growing annoyance. After making a deal to return to Earth to find Dean in exchange for his grace, Cas finds himself in the same room he last saw the man. He’s devastated to discover that he’s too late, Dean is dead and in Heaven. Realizing there's no point to coming back to a world without Dean, Cas goes to Heaven to speak with Jack in hopes of figuring out a way to get back to Dean and actually stay around. Of course, it's more complicated than they expect.
Dean and Cas are desperate to find their way back to each other, but the universe seems to be working hard to keep them apart.

Jack is the new God, the bunker is full of the new generation of hunters who are excited to learn from the best in the business, and Sam and Dean rarely work any cases these days. Everything is fine, but something's missing.

Dean has prepared an entire speech, full of parallels such as "Good things do happen, Cas.", "I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition!" and most importantly "I love you."However, once in the Empty, Sam and Dean find out that Castiel escaped a long time ago.

Cas comes back from the empty. Human, and without memory.
There’s resilience to be said about the human spirit, though, and how after everything- we still have our souls. They tie us together in ways beyond reason, and Cas doesn’t know why- but he knows these people, they’re important. He feels it.
With this work, my primary thesis has been expressing a parallel to Castiel's Despair confession with Dean's expression of feelings here. Because as I see it, Castiel's confession is less about him expressing himself and it's more about getting Dean to feel loved and earning of that love and understanding that he's made of more good parts than bad because that love exists. So essentially through the angst of Castiel's memory loss, we gain something else here- his ability to view his life and his relationships from an outside perspective. Unmarred by his previous transgressions and the years between them, there's a clearer perspective to be gained as to the extent of care surrounding him, fitting him in a place to newly see the depth of care for him.
