Summary
Rumor has it that HYDRA had created a program dedicated to experimenting on and weaponizing mutants. Mutants they couldn't control were slaughtered while others were trained into potential assets. However, these assets never saw the field because of HYDRA's collapse. Ever since then, their whereabouts and even their existence has been the subject of gossip in the intelligence community.
Bucky Barnes has never been one for gossip. But when he heard this rumor, he knew it to be true. He'd faced off against one of these mutant agents back when he'd been the Winter Soldier. The agent, in question, had been a little girl that could phase. After spending months reflecting, he realized, he too, wanted to know the whereabouts of these mutants.
He'd soon find out as he, Sam Wilson, Joaquin Torres, and John Walker would be sent on a mission to apprehend a trio of mutant vigilantes that had been having frequent run-ins with SHIELD. The men would then be hurled into the hidden underworld of mutantkind.

Sometimes she thought about the normal life she could've had if she had refused the government's help and tried to save her sister on her own. The normal life she could've had if they hadn't tried to turn her into a weapon and if she had never been caught by Hydra.
But that was a waste of time. Life was what it was; her sister was alive, and so was she, but nothing would ever go back to the way it was.
After years on the run, would she finally settle in the arms of America's golden boy? It seemed like a good idea. The only problem was the man she hated more than she hated the government or Hydra.

He carefully removed the gauze covering its upper quadriceps and guided the Soldier into the oversized shower stall. It was capable of performing its own cleansing routines, but this handler had initiated shared showers early in their cohabitation. It was not irregular, except that all previous handlers had used this time for recreational purposes as well. The Captain seemed only to take satisfaction in thoroughly cleansing the body, as one might perform maintenance on a valuable rifle. A fitting comparison, if it had not jammed and misfired today.

After the events that lead the Avengers to fall apart, Steve Rogers entrusts his friend Bucky Barnes to the Crown Prince of Wakanda. But after only a few days, an assassin is caught in Wakanda. Her codename - Nemesis. Her mission - to kill the Winter Soldier.
In their search for answers, Steve and Bucky find a link to someone from their past, someone they never thought they would hear of again - Evelyn Rogers, Steve's twin sister. The pair discover that she died in a fire in the 60s. The only thing that was retrieved from the ashes was a strongbox containing several letters and a carefully wrapped package for one James Buchanan Barnes.
Evelyn's final legacy is her diary, which Bucky finds strange. She would never have left him anything personal since they hated each other. And how could she possibly have known he was still alive?
Pushed on by Steve, Bucky reads Evelyn's final words, and page by page, his memories return. But as he nears the end of the diary, it becomes clear that some memories should have remained lost. -

Summary
Bucky Barnes has a lot to contend with in the 21st century. One difficult task after another is laid out in front of him: managing his new found freedom, attending therapy and working through his trauma. It's a struggle, but recovery is not a straight line, as his therapist so often likes to remind him.
He has to navigate this friendship / relationship / whatever it is with Sam all the while managing his guilt and shame for his years as the Winter Soldier, and his grief over Steve's death. Then of course there’s these new super soldiers that have appeared out of nowhere that have to be dealt with, along with the frustrating inclusion of new faces, like Walker, and the familiar, like Zemo.
And then there is another task, one that sometimes seems to be the most difficult task of all: learning to be kind to his past self.
Rewrite / fix it of TFATWS – you do not need to read the other parts of this series, this works as a standalone. Pre TFATWS to about three months after the series ends. Not just a rehash of the TV series. Entire story is written, will update fortnightly, perhaps more frequently.
